  • Where Has the Naturally Aspirated V-8-Powered, German Sedan Gone?

Posted 2017-06-25 10:00:05 by: George Alston

The throttle response is immediate and there’s a lovely, honest growl from the 5.5-liter V-8. If it wasn’t for the ‘E550’ badge on the trunk, most people would simply think it’s a typical V-6-powered E-Class. My friend’s 2011 Mercedes-Benz is a proper, sub-5 second 0-60 mph car but it’s not overly sporty and it isn’t... Sometimes owning an older car or truck is a thing of pure bliss: the feel of the road, the freedom of the journey, the smell of aging plastic, leather, and steel. But sometimes it’s a giant headache — a cacophony rather than a symphony. This was one of those times. Maybe both. We were leaving... • Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace SUV

Posted 2017-06-23 16:52:11 by: George Alston

“If you want your Tiguan with a little more space, Volkswagen has the answer in the form of the Allspace. It’s not quite as big as a Skoda Kodiaq, however”   The latest Volkswagen Tiguan arrived in late 2016, sporting a sharp new look and plenty of showroom appeal. The American market – an important one for VW – hasn’t received the new car yet, and won’t get the Tiguan as we know it it all. Instead, to better suit tastes on the other side of the Atlantic, VW has made a slightly bigger Tiguan Allspace version – 215mm longer, to be exact, with an extra 109mm between the front and rear wheels. Although built to make its American customers happy, the larger Tiguan is available in the UK, too, giving you the choice of a shade more space and even two extra seats if the standard car isn’t big enough. The Allspace will be sold with a broadly similar range of petrol and diesel engines and the option of four-wheel drive will remain. You can choose an Allspace with the same five-seat layout as the standard Tiguan, or opt for the ‘5+2’ option – that is, five seats plus two fold-away seats in the back, intended mostly for occasional short journeys or small children. Not too small, though; there aren’t any ISOFIX points back there. VW reckons most buyers won’t bother, but we beg to differ. Image 1 of 25 Regardless of which model or seat configuration you choose, the Tiguan Allspace offers the same combination of quality materials and great design and build that make the standard version a standout model in its class. It’s far nicer inside than rivals like the Nissan X-Trail and Toyota RAV4, but its SEAT Ateca and Skoda Kodiaq cousins aren’t too far off in the quality stakes, and both are just as comfortable. Engine options for the Allspace broadly mirror those of its smaller sibling, with the 2.0-litre TDI diesels likely to be the most popular choice and a powerful, twin-turbocharged BiTDI topping the range. As ...

  • Audi RS5 Coupe

Posted 2017-06-23 14:45:17 by: George Alston

“The Audi RS5 is easy to drive fast – but falls short of providing the necessary thrills” Audi has been offering RS versions of its popular saloons, estates and hatchbacks ever since the Porsche-developed Audi RS2 turned the innocuous Audi 80 Avant into a supercar-humbling backroad battler. That was over two decades ago, and since then the RS prefix has adorned Audi’s rivals to BMW’s M cars and Mercedes’ AMG-developed models. The RS5 is Audi’s answer to the BMW M4 Coupe and Mercedes-AMG C63 coupe. As with previous versions, it comes as the result of giving the Audi S5 coupe a thorough going-over, and this is evident when you gaze at the spec sheet. The first thing you notice compared to the previous RS5 is that its V8 engine is no more – in the quest for better fuel economy and lower emissions, a twin-turbocharged V6 has taken its place. However, while the car hasn’t lost any power, you soon find that this change has had a huge effect on how the RS5 drives. Image 1 of 32 Judging a book by its cover, a glance at the RS5 tells you the insides are well worth investigating. The Audi A5 Coupe is a great-looking car to start with and the S5 sharpens its appeal with a more dynamic character, and this full-blown RS5 has a real air of understated menace. Without looking overblown, its flared wheelarches and hungry lower grilles drop big hints as to its performance potential, while side-vented LED headlamps add a finishing touch. The racy theme continues inside. The Audi A5 dashboard is one of the classiest out there, and it’s brought to life in the RS5 with bright red stitching that contrasts with the plush Alcantara suede trim on its figure-hugging sports seats. Elsewhere, Audi’s latest infotainment system looks slick and is a pleasure to use, while the materials surrounding you are top-notch. On paper and in the metal, the RS5 looks like the whole package. And as if to dispel any doubts about the change to a smaller, ...

  • Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SUV

Posted 2017-06-22 14:39:51 by: George Alston

"The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a genuinely striking car and while it may not have the polish of some rivals, it’s a worthy contender in this class" The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a mid-sized SUV that competes with evergreen favourites like the Nissan Qashqai, Kia Sportage and Volkswagen Tiguan, as well as newer models like the Peugeot 3008 and SEAT Ateca. In such a full and competitive class, it’s good to look sharp, so the Eclipse Cross’ snappy styling deserves praise for its individual look. In a generally staid class, it comes close to equaling the Toyota CH-R for visual excitement. Image 1 of 24 The Eclipse Cross is evidence of Mitsubishi’s design department really letting its hair down. The Japanese company has a long SUV history, with models like the full-size Mitsubishi Shogun majoring on sturdy off-road appeal, while the smaller Mitsubishi Outlander has family practicality in mind. The latter is also available in plug-in hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV guise and emissions-reducing electric technology is expected to be offered on the Eclipse Cross before long, too. But to achieve lasting success, Mitsubishi’s first truly stylish SUV will need to be far more than just a pretty face. Initial impressions when you open the door and climb on board are good. The dashboard is artfully designed and has a distinct air of Lexus about it, with high-quality plastics in evidence. Every Eclipse Cross has a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen which is intuitive to use, although it’s a shame that most models come without sat nav. Comfort is good, too, with supportive seats and a nice driving position. In fact, the Eclipse Cross’ interior is a genuine step up from other Mitsubishis. It’s pleasing to see the company making such strides forward from the unremarkable Mitsubishi ASX, although it does also have the effect of making the more expensive Outlander look rather outclassed. The only real disappointment is when you hit ...

Comparisons with the X-Trail are of particular interest, because (and the sharp-eyed may already have noticed a similarity) the Koleos is based on the Nissan, just like the Kadjar is based on the Qashqai. Don’t worry, though – unlike some lazy rebadging exercises of years gone by, this is a thorough reworking. Unique styling, specifications and trim ensure there’s plenty to choose between the Nissan and Renault, and a large interior and 565-litre boot help separate the Koleos from the Kadjar in Renault showrooms. Curiously, however, Renault has been so keen to concentrate on extra passenger space and comfort that no seven-seat option is available, which seems an odd move given rivals like the Kodiaq, Sorento and Santa Fe offer them. Sales staff will point you in the direction of the Renault Grand Scenic MPV instead, but in a market shifting towards SUVs, this seems like a missed opportunity. Image 2 of 28 There are no less than six versions of Koleos to choose from, if you consider the two diesel engines and the choice between front or four-wheel drive with a manual or automatic gearbox. The smaller engine is a 1.6-litre dCi with 129bhp, coupled with front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual gearbox. Returning 57.6mpg fuel economy and the lowest CO2 emissions in the range (128g/km), this is likely to be the most popular choice with company-car users thanks to its 27% Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) band. With ...

“The BMW 5 Series hybrid is capable of 141mpg and can drive for 29 miles on electricity alone, yet it still feels like the legendary executive saloon” The BMW 5 Series has reclaimed its place at the top of the executive saloon class already, but what about the BMW 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid model? Is it as good as the rest of the 5 Series range, and could it even be the one to covet? BMW is certainly getting serious about plug-in hybrid technology, with sales of its alternative-fuel cars up by almost 90% in 2017 and a target to sell 100,000 plug-in or all-electric cars this year. Financially, the 5 Series hybrid already makes sense, because company-car drivers will only be liable for 9% Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax, saving several thousand pounds a year compared to a diesel model. Not only this, but the 530e can also travel for around 29 miles on electric power when the battery pack is fully charged, meaning quite a number of customers will be able to get to and from work without using any fuel. That electric range is also around eight miles further than the Mercedes E-Class E350e manages. Image 2 of 20 The 530e’s official consumption figure is 141.2mpg, but this will largely depend on how far you drive and how often you can recharge the batteries – which takes around three hours from a high-voltage wallbox or charging post. BMW is also hoping the 530e will appeal to private buyers looking to save money on running costs, or even make use of their home solar panels to top up its battery pack for truly green motoring. These customers will also be able to benefit from the Government’s £2,500 plug-in car grant. Power is provided by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and electric motor producing a combined 248bhp, channeled to the rear wheels by an eight-speed automatic gearbox. In automatic eDrive mode, the car will get from 0-62mph in a brisk 6.2 seconds, while its top speed is 146mph. There’s also a ...

  • Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer estate

Posted 2017-06-20 11:20:59 by: George Alston

"The latest Insignia Sports Tourer is a far more accomplished all-rounder than its predecessor" The latest Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer certainly has its work cut out for it. Like the Volkswagen Passat and Ford Mondeo estates, it has to compete for buyers at a time when many are falling for the charms of ‘premium’ rivals. However, life isn’t easy for the BMW 3 Series Touring, Audi A4 Avant or Mercedes C-Class Estate either. Families are still moving away from conventional estate cars and into compact SUVs such as the SEAT Ateca, Skoda Kodiaq and Nissan Qashqai. Vauxhall hopes, though, that its Insignia Sports Tourer can recapture some of these customers with a large estate car that’s bigger, more enjoyable to drive and better value than ever. Image 2 of 28 Vauxhall has clearly succeeded on the first point – at 125mm longer than a Skoda Superb estate, the Insignia Sports Tourer is a pretty huge car. As a car sold in numerous markets, its extra size increases its appeal in North America, but also means UK buyers benefit from far more interior and boot space than the previous Insignia Sports Tourer. The downside is that the Vauxhall always feels like a big car. On cramped urban roads it can seem rather cumbersome, and effortless parking can take some practice. That won’t be of any concern to passengers, who can enjoy leg-stretching room in both the front and back seats. And – despite the steeply curving roofline – there’s no shortage of headroom in either row. The boot is generous, too; at 560 litres, it handily trumps the Ford Mondeo Estate, although it can’t match the acres of room you find in the boot of a Skoda Superb Estate. Image 9 of 28 As a driving machine, the Sports Tourer doesn’t come close to its premium rivals, but is comfortable, safe and easy to drive once you’ve got used to its bulk. Thankfully, the steering is accurate and it’s easy to place the Vauxhall on open roads. And while this ...

Italy’s Alfa Romeo Giulietta has apparently inspired a British suit company to develop an “all-weather high-performance” suit. Yup, a suit. • Ferrari 812 Superfast coupe

Posted 2017-06-20 08:20:51 by: George Alston

“The Ferrari 812 Superfast is so astonishingly good it makes one question how supercars can possibly improve.” Let’s get its name out of the way first: the Ferrari 812 Superfast has a 6.5-litre V12 engine that produces 800cv, or roughly 789bhp – hence the 812 bit. As for Superfast, well, thanks to the Maserati Quattroporte, we know Italian carmakers aren’t afraid to take a literal approach when naming their cars. But the 812 Superfast is more than just quick: while it’s ostensibly a replacement for the Ferrari F12, that car could be intimidating – even for experienced road testers. The most impressive thing about the 812 Superfast is how easy it is to get to know, and how well its vast power is balanced with a remarkable sense of tractability. And therein lies the 812’s genius: a car this fast shouldn’t be so easy to exploit, nor so comfortable to be in. It’s like having a Rottweiler you’d trust to take your children to school. ...

  • Mazda CX-5 SUV

Posted 2017-06-12 16:12:35 by: George Alston

"The Mazda CX-5 is great to drive and painless to own" The most famous Mazda you can buy today, the MX-5 roadster is reknowned as one of the most entertaining cars you can drive at any price. Somehow, all the other cars in the Mazda line-up feel as if they’re infused with the little two-seater’s DNA. This latest version of the CX-5 SUV is no exception. This is remarkable when you consider that it’s quite a large, heavy car, but driver appeal is a central part of the Mazda promise. It’s certainly a more rewarding SUV to drive than its Volkswagen Tiguan, Ford Edge and Nissan Qashqai rivals, and can tread on the toes of the Audi Q3 and BMW X3 from the class above. Image 1 of 16 This isn’t only true of the way the latest CX-5 drives. To look at, it’s not huge departure from its predecessor, but has become sharper and more expressive. Its nose is dominated by a large grille and slim headlights, while the general shape is a little sleeker despite being slightly shorter than the old car. We reckon it has more visual appeal than most rivals, including the Skoda Kodiaq and SEAT Ateca – talented rivals that its predecessor didn’t have to compete against. There was nothing much wrong with the previous CX-5 inside and Mazda’s approach has been to improve the physical feel of the interior rather than its layout and design. You’ll find pleasant tactile materials everywhere your fingertips roam and subtle chrome highlights add a feeling of quality. The latest CX-5 also gets a welcome technology boost, with a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system that juts prominently from the dashboard and benefits from a rotary controller. This saves you from stretching to reach the display and reduces the occurrence of fingerprints. The CX-5 line-up consists of just two very well equipped versions. The SE-L Nav is the least expensive and offers the infotainment system mentioned above, which includes sat nav, DAB radio and iPhone ...

“The Toyota Auris Hybrid is very economical and a sensible choice, but you’ll have more fun in many other cars” Hybrid technology isn’t widely used among its rivals, so the Toyota Auris Hybrid is one of the best choices for those who want a family-sized hatchback with much lower running costs. Apart from the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid and the Toyota Prius, the Auris’ main rivals include the conventionally powered Vauxhall Astra, Ford Focus and Kia Cee’d. Image 1 of 8 A 1.8-litre petrol with a CVT gearbox is the only engine option and it’s shared with the aforementioned Prius. Excellent economy is one of the major aspects of the Auris that set it apart from its rivals, with the ability to achieve more than 80mpg and very low CO2 emissions. Nevertheless, it doesn’t seem that much consideration went into how the Auris drives, because it’s swept aside by almost all of the competition. The additional weight of the hybrid system negatively affects cornering ability and ride quality, although a sparkling drive has never been a notable trait of the Auris, or its Corolla predecessor. The regular Auris finished 43rd out of the 75 cars ranked in our 2017 Driver Power owner satisfaction survey of cars currently on sale in the UK. ...

  • Honda Civic Type R hatchback

Posted 2017-06-08 09:16:05 by: George Alston

"The nimble, responsive Civic Type R delivers thrills without sacrificing comfort or practicality" The Type R badge has been held in great respect ever since it first appeared in the UK two decades ago. Since then, the red ‘R’ has adorned the rump of four generations of Honda Civic, and now it’s made it onto a fifth. This is no glorified trim level, though. The Type R treatment involves giving the regular Civic a thorough top-to-bottom going over, with dozens of upgrades in the quest for greater driving pleasure. And this latest model has addressed the few weaknesses of the previous model – quibbles that held it from outright victory against the Ford Focus RS and Volkswagen Golf R in the hot-hatchback wars. Image 2 of 18 While the previous Civic Type R was undoubtedly a terrific driver’s car, it wasn’t quite the complete package it could have been. Its brittle ride quality and rather brusque manners meant that long journeys could be a chore, and its interior wasn’t exactly the last word in sophistication. Fortunately, the same improvements that make the latest Honda Civic a better all-rounder than the previous generation have given the Type R a real boost, too. Crucially, the bits that make it a Type R are as impressive as ever. The 2.0-litre turbocharged engine has been carried over from the previous model, but has been fettled for 10 extra horsepower, bringing the total to 316bhp. The turbocharger is unobtrusive, too – with hardly any delay in response, the Type R engine simply feels big and muscular. This means it accelerates very quickly, whether you’re pulling away from rest or overtaking slower traffic. Its claimed – though largely academic – top speed is 169mph, while Honda states acceleration of 5.9-seconds to 62mph. We wouldn’t be at all surprised, though, if it was actually rather quicker than that if you put it against the clock. The huge – and very powerful – brakes are unique for the Type R, and ...

  • Volkswagen Arteon saloon

Posted 2017-06-01 16:47:57 by: George Alston

"The Arteon is a polished all-rounder, with the potential to upset premium rivals" The Volkswagen Arteon is one of the most ambitious cars ever to wear a VW badge. It replaces the Volkswagen CC, a car that competed more fiercely with the Volkswagen Passat it was based on than the premium rivals it was tilted against. This time, though, Volkswagen intends to make inroads into Mercedes, BMW and Audi’s sales with a car that’s far more than just a pretty face. The Arteon is pitched further upmarket than the CC and Volkswagen is known to have designs on Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5 Series customers. Dimensionally, though, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe and Audi A5 Sportback are more directly comparable. But can the sleek VW hold up against such powerful competition? Image 1 of 19 The Volkswagen brand is a household name and carries a great deal of respect. It’s never really been associated with luxury or prestige, though, but the Arteon intends to address this with arresting looks, a lavish interior and a huge list of hi-tech innovations. The Arteon is certainly confidently styled. Its nose incorporates the most direct translation yet of a corporate look first seen on Volkswagen concept cars several years ago. It features sculpted headlamps with LED daytime running light elements that flow into a slatted VW grille, which continues down almost to the road surface. The bonnet is heavily contoured, following the lines of the headlamps and merging with the upper surfaces of the front wings and doors, before twisting to incorporate broad hips over the rear wheels. There’s no denying it, this kind of attention to form is new to Volkswagen, and a sure sign that the Arteon is intended to be taken very seriously. Image 7 of 19 Against the drama of the exterior, the inside story is almost disappointing, but you soon realise that VW’s familiar, straightforward dashboard design wasn’t broken and didn’t need fixing. There are echoes of the ...

  • Volvo XC60 SUV

Posted 2017-05-16 14:10:08 by: George Alston

"The Volvo XC60 has the technology and beautiful interior of the XC90, but in a smaller, more stylish body" The transformation of Volvo is now in full swing, with the new Volvo XC60 SUV joining the bigger Volvo XC90 SUV, Volvo S90 saloon and Volvo V90 estate in redefining the Swedish brand as a premium marque on a level playing field with Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar and Land Rover. It does, however, mean the XC60 is now more expensive than before. Replacing the XC60 has been no small task – it’s Volvo’s best-selling car of all time after all, so perfecting it using technology honed from the XC90 was wise. Shared design traits are easy to spot, including Volvo’s characteristic ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED daytime running lights, an upright grille emblazoned with the Volvo badge and a distinctive rear end with pronounced shoulders. But the XC60 also has a lower, curvier and sportier look than the XC90. Image 2 of 23 The engines are familiar from the latest Volvo models, too, all being 2.0 litres in capacity, with the diesel models expected to account for the bulk of sales. Every model gets four-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard, including the entry-level D4 diesel with 187bhp, which gets from 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds and returns up to 54.3mpg. The D5 PowerPulse increases power to 232bhp, cutting 1.2 seconds off the acceleration figure but only dropping fuel consumption to 51.4mpg. For now, there’s only one petrol option, badged T5, which is slightly faster than the diesels (0-62mph in 6.8 seconds) thanks to its 251bhp turbocharged engine, but well off the pace of high-performance versions of the Jaguar F-Pace and Porsche Macan. A T8 plug-in hybrid is also expected, with a serious 402bhp yet CO2 emissions of just 49g/km and a Benefit-in-Kind rating of 9% to woo company-car drivers. The XC60 also feels more relaxed when you head out on the road, with less to reward the driver than an F-Pace. On the plus ...

  • Vauxhall Crossland X SUV

Posted 2017-05-11 15:49:58 by: George Alston

“The Vauxhall Crossland X is practical and comfortable, but it’s let down by an underwhelming driving experience.” If you visit a Vauxhall showroom in the hunt for a small-to-medium-sized car, you’ll be spoilt for choice: buyers who would traditionally have gravitated towards a Vauxhall Astra or Vauxhall Corsa are also presented with the Vauxhall Mokka X SUV and its smaller sibling: the Crossland X. We say smaller, but the Crossland X is only 6cm shorter and 2cm narrower than the Mokka X, so it’s impressively practical and offers a sensible alternative to rivals like the Peugeot 2008 and Renault Captur. While it has a higher starting price than those cars, the generous amount of standard equipment even the entry-level Crossland X comes with largely justifies this. Image 1 of 24 Its looks are a mixed success to our eyes: despite Vauxhall claiming the Crossland X is an SUV, there are definite shades of people-carrier to it. Indeed, it’s not hard to see it as the Vauxhall Meriva replacement it really is – especially if you imagine the pieces of black plastic trim at the bottom of its doors are body-coloured. Still, the Crossland X comes with a range of impressive petrol and diesel engines, has comfortable seats, excellent interior proportions and an easy-to-use dashboard. It’s not very enjoyable to drive, though. The steering is too sensitive, for one thing, meaning it feels twitchy both during town driving and on faster country roads. This initially improves on the motorway when the Crossland X settles down to a decent and relaxing cruise – until you notice the wind whistling around the mirrors and door pillars. Any prominent side winds that present themselves, meanwhile, can cause more buffeting than is ideal on exposed motorways. The news isn’t all bad, though: encounter poor road surfaces with prominent divots, broken tarmac and sunken drain covers and you’ll find the Crossland X deals with such impediments well, ...

  • Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid

Posted 2017-04-19 06:40:41 by: George Alston

“Stellar economy figures make the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid an appealing alternative to a traditional family diesel car” If you’re looking for a new car without a conventional petrol or diesel engine, the Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid should definitely be on your shortlist. With a larger battery pack than the standard Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid and a petrol engine to eliminate the range anxiety associated with the all-electric model, it’s capable of stellar economy figures without any hassle. Used to maximum effect, Hyundai claims the combination of electric and petrol power can return up to 257mpg with CO2 emissions of just 26g/km. Instead of the 43bhp electric motor fitted in the Ioniq Hybrid, the Plug-In Hybrid has a 60bhp unit, along with the same 104bhp 1.6-litre GDI petrol engine. This means performance is fractionally better, with 0-62mph taking around 10.5 seconds (instead of 10.8). Around town, the Hyundai has plenty of go off the line, but ultimately doesn’t feel quite as responsive as its main rival, the Toyota Prius Plug-In. Image 1 of 20 The Ioniq is quick enough though, and its petrol engine is fairly refined when it cuts in to assist the electric motor, creating a relaxing driving experience that’s particularly well-suited to towns and suburbia. You can select EV mode, which stops the petrol engine from running for an all-electric range of up to 39 miles - handy if the end of your journey is in a city. The Ioniq’s default mode is the Hybrid setting, which smoothly alternates between electric and petrol power. We wish we could say the relationship between the regenerative braking and standard disc brakes was as harmonious, as the different resistance between the two can lead to some jerky stops when slowing gradually. You probably wouldn’t expect the Ioniq to be a supreme driver's car, and low-rolling resistance tyres, light steering and the hybrid powertrain mean you’d be right. In its favour, the dual-clutch ...
