  • Suzuki Swift hatchback

Posted 2017-03-21 17:20:37 by: George Alston

“The latest Suzuki Swift builds on predecessor’s appeal, but can’t topple the supermini class leaders” The Suzuki Swift is a supermini that has slowly built itself a strong following, despite its maker having a lower profile in the UK than many others. The previous model earned fans with its disarming looks and a genuine sense of driving fun. Add low running and purchase costs into the bargain and the Japanese marque had a success story on its hands. The latest generation seeks to build on the previous Swift’s strengths, while addressing its weaknesses. It has a hard task ahead of it, though – its popular Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa rivals are becoming ever-more capable, while the SEAT Ibiza, Renault Clio, Peugeot 208 and Volkswagen Polo all offer their own potent take on the supermini formula. Image 1 of 27 Like the previous Swift, the latest model is keenly priced, but it needs to be, as cars like the Citroen C3, Hyundai i20 and Kia Rio offer such appealing value for money. You could argue that the Suzuki has more style than these cars, though, and that has always been one of its chief selling points. Critics might say that the previous Swift’s style was too evidently inspired by the MINI hatchback, but whether or not you agree, its ‘semi-floating’ roof and pert proportions had plenty of showroom appeal. The latest model has a very similar overall look, but beefed up with additional muscle at the bottom of the doors and around the wheelarches. The car looks agreeably squat and purposeful, suggesting it’ll be fun to drive. Fortunately, that promise is fulfilled – like its predecessor, the latest Swift feels naturally suited to darting between corners. Despite its relatively low power, it’s a car that knows how to make enthusiastic drivers grin. It’s a shame, then, that the Suzuki doesn’t treat its passengers quite as keenly. Though the interior looks more stylish than before, it still falls behind rivals ...

  • Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport hatchback

Posted 2017-03-16 11:25:38 by: George Alston

“Handsome, good to drive and well equipped, the Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport deserves to be a huge success” Make no mistake: the Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport is an excellent large family hatchback, and perhaps the best car of its kind out there. That should be enough to guarantee vast sales, international awards and devoted fans – but life isn’t as simple as that. The latest Insignia Grand Sport is about 175kg lighter and £1,500 cheaper, like-for-like, than the car it replaces, but two problems remain. Firstly, executive saloons like the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4 have been stealing sales from the Insignia – as well as the Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat – since the turn of the millennium. Secondly, SUVs like the Nissan Qashqai and SEAT Ateca offer a higher ride height and are more en vogue than the Insignia Grand Sport, and the rise of SUV sales shows no sign of abating. If neither of those trends concerns you, should buy the new Insignia Grand Sport? Emphatically yes. It’s a strikingly good-looking car, comes very keenly price (the cheapest is a whisker over £17,000), is available with the latest generation of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, and offers all the connectivity features and safety systems most buyers will ever need. The range starts with an all-new turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine, which comes with either 138 or 163bhp. Buyers after a diesel can have a 1.6-litre engine, again with two power outputs, while those after maximum punch can go for a 2.0-litre petrol or a 2.0-litre diesel. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard and an eight-speed automatic is optional. Image 1 of 20 While the Insignia is so new that Vauxhall hasn’t released full performance figures, the entry-level 138bhp 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine is brisk enough on paper, reaching 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds. It feels a little underpowered on the road, though, and needs to be worked hard to make progress – particularly at ...

  • Fiat Fullback pickup

Posted 2017-03-16 11:25:28 by: George Alston

“The Fiat Fullback can work hard and play hard, but rather lacks polish” With the SUV boom showing no sign of slowing down, the UK market for comfortable pick-up trucks is also more buoyant than ever. Models like the Nissan Navara, Volkswagen Amarok, Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux and Mitsubishi L200 have been attracting buyers for several years, so can the beefy Fiat Fullback stand out from the herd? In fact, the Fiat is closely related to the Mitsubishi – it shares mechanical and body structure with the Japanese truck and only really differs in cosmetic detail, trim and standard equipment. For many, the Mitsubishi relationship will come as good news – the familiar L200 is proven and well liked, even though its underlying design is getting rather dated now. Nevertheless, Fiat has made sure the Fullback has plenty of showroom appeal, and a more distinctive Cross model is scheduled to be launched soon with unique added styling touches. Image 5 of 26 It’s not difficult to see why pickup trucks have become so popular. They were once the domain of builders and workmen, but high-specification models have become popular as a good-value alternative to conventional SUVs. They have significant road presence, muscular looks and can deal with life’s knocks and scrapes. Plus, for those with active lifestyles, the large load bay out back can be a real boon. Whether it’s bikes or jet skis, you name it, with a big payload capacity you can carry what you like. The Fiat’s rugby position name hints at its ability to cope with the rough-and-tumble of an active life and that’s certainly the impression you get on close inspection. Running boards with steps, a skid-plate below the deep front bumper and big, chunky alloy wheels lend a ‘don’t mess’ air. Inside, substance very much takes priority over style, with a simple layout and robust materials, if not much in the way of futuristic design or classy finishes. Space isn’t at a premium, ...

  • Jeep Compass SUV

Posted 2017-03-10 11:57:20 by: George Alston

“Sitting mid-way between the Renegade and Cherokee, the Jeep Compass offers good value comfort on or off the road” The Jeep name is more widely recognised in the UK than its relatively low sales figures would suggest. While models like the Jeep Cherokee are big sellers in its native North America, the brand has struggled to get a foothold in the UK. With Jeep now part of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) group, recent models have been more in tune with European tastes and the latest Jeep Compass is based on the platform used for the Fiat 500X. It has its sights set on attracting buyers away from a growing raft of compact SUV rivals, including the Nissan Qashqai, SEAT Ateca and Volkswagen Tiguan. Image 1 of 20 The Compass name has been used by Jeep before on its entry-level model. That position is now taken by the Jeep Renegade, so the Compass slots in between that model and its futuristically styled Cherokee big brother. It actually bears a strong family resemblance to that car, both outside and in. This is certainly not the budget-basement car it once was, but still looks good value when you take account of the big leap forward in build quality. The Compass’ interior is well assembled, nicely designed and seems more grown-up than that of the Renegade. Jump in after spending time in a one of those and you’ll immediately appreciate the increased interior space – there’s far more legroom and a much bigger boot. A key feature of the Compass – and any other Jeep – is off-road ability, and we were very impressed when we put it through its paces on a demanding Californian trail. Our car had the optional Trailhawk package, with an extra-low crawl ratio to help you make slow but determined progress across really challenging terrain. Even the regular Compass should be more than capable of dealing with British ‘wet field’ conditions, or the worst our weather can offer. It’s a shame that we didn’t find the North ...

  • Mercedes E-Class Coupe

Posted 2017-03-09 23:26:47 by: George Alston

"The latest Mercedes E-Class Coupe is more stylish – and more practical – than ever" Whereas the Mercedes E-Class saloon is all about providing space and comfort for all the family, its coupe sister is far more focused on indulgence. It seeks to look rather more exclusive and classy, with enough visual prestige to attract buyers away from the BMW 6 Series and Audi A7, as well as high-spec versions of the Audi A5 Coupe. Released a while after the saloon, the E-Class Coupe has far more sculpted looks, and you wouldn’t know that the two cars shared much of their structure without being told. While the saloon has an elegant yet straightforward style, the coupe has far more curvature to its flanks, with a feature line that gives it a dynamic look. Image 2 of 69 The twin power bulges on the bonnet are a familiar Mercedes design cue that hint towards some muscular engines – and the E-Class Coupe doesn’t disappoint on that count. Even the entry-level 2.0-litre E220d diesel pushes out 191bhp, and there’s a brace of petrol engines, too: a 2.0-litre E300 that produces 242bhp and a range-topping 3.0-litre E400 with 328bhp. A larger diesel is likely to follow soon – and there are rumours of an AMG version with V8 power. All engines are fairly economical for their power, too; the E220d will return over 70mpg and will be a sensible choice for company-car users thanks to its impressively low 106g/km CO2 emissions. High-mileage drivers will also enjoy the way the E-Class Coupe rides – despite its sporty looks, it absorbs motorway bumps with grace and is very comfortable on long journeys. With the optional air suspension system, it’s remarkably smooth on potholed urban roads, too. The E-Class saloon impressed with its classy, high-tech interior and the coupe offers the same first-rate passenger environment. Material quality is top-notch and everything is superbly screwed together. There’s an impressive amount of space inside and the ...

  • Smart ForFour ED hatchback

Posted 2017-03-01 11:40:47 by: George Alston

"The Smart ForFour ED is a stylish, fun electric car for the city but its range is relatively small." The Smart ForFour ED (electric drive) is an electric version of the four-seater city car that combines the standard model’s agility around town with the zero emissions and smooth power delivery of an electric motor. The 60kW electric motor provides 81bhp and because this power can be deployed almost immediately, the ForFour feels very nippy when pulling away from traffic lights and junctions. The level of standard equipment is good, the car is no less practical than the conventionally powered ForFour and buyers still have plenty of personalisation options. The two main problems with the Smart ForFour ED relate to the battery and the car’s price. The latest Renault ZOE is available with a 41kWh battery that delivers vastly better range than the 17.6kWh battery in the ForFour ED (about 250 miles vs 96 miles) and the ZOE is also available with a fast charger that can give you 80% charge in around an hour. ForFour ED owners will have to wait until 2018 for that kind of charging performance. Given the drawbacks of the ForFour ED’s battery and the car’s relatively high price, it’s hard to justify buying one as your only a car – a case that’s easier to make for the ZOE. The ForFour ED is a competent performer, and plenty of people will like its looks and relative rarity on the road, but there are a number of important reasons to consider the alternatives before buying one. ...

  • Audi A5 Cabriolet convertible

Posted 2017-02-24 14:03:43 by: George Alston

“It’s no sports car, but the comfortable Audi A5 Cabriolet blends classy top-down looks and quality with surprising practicality” The four-seat convertible is something of a German speciality, and one that has always been successful for Audi. In the nineties, it sold a model known simply as the Audi Cabriolet, which was followed by the strong-selling Audi A4 Cabriolet. More recently, the cabriolet and its coupe sister were given their own A5 badge, which has since expanded to include the rakish Audi A5 Sportback. This most recent A5 Cabriolet was all-new for 2017, but does it have what it takes to beat its BMW 4 Series Convertible and Mercedes C-Class Cabriolet rivals? With an all-new Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet just around the corner as well, the Audi can’t afford to leave anything to chance when it comes to style, performance or desirability. But as with most other kinds of car, fuel efficiency and low emissions are increasingly important and the A5 Cabriolet has to prove it won’t break the bank for buyers. Image 2 of 31 Anyone familiar with the previous generation of A5 will instantly recognise the latest version. With the A5 selling well since launch, Audi has wisely avoided tampering with a style that customers obviously like. So although this is an all-new car, you’ll probably only notice detail changes. The headlamps are bolder and stretch back further and the grille has been made more prominent. Along with newly profiled bumpers, you really can see the differences when old and new are parked side by side. Although the exterior changes seem trivial, there’s far more to discuss under the surface. The mechanical platform is all-new and features Audi’s latest powerful, economical petrol and diesel engines, with a turbocharged petrol V6 in the range-topping S5. Front-wheel-drive and quattro four-wheel-drive versions are available, and a seven-speed S tronic gearbox is obligatory with all but the entry-level petrol ...

“The Peugeot 5008 is a distinctive seven-seater SUV with a striking interior and a comfortable driving experience” When the latest Peugeot 5008 was being conceived, its designers clearly made the conscious decision to move away from its predecessor’s MPV people-carrier looks, betting on the continued ascent of the SUV. A similar call was made with the excellent Peugeot 3008, and the 5008 is nearly (although not quite) as successful. While pricing has yet to be announced, we expect the seven-seater 5008 to be a direct rival to the Skoda Kodiaq, as well as the more expensive Land Rover Discovery Sport – but you could also consider a seven-seat people carrier like the Renault Grand Scenic, Vauxhall Zafira Tourer or Citroen Grand C4 Picasso if you’re in the market for such a car. Image 1 of 16 The 5008’s engine range comprises two turbocharged petrols – a 128bhp 1.2-litre and a 163bhp 1.6-litre – and three diesels. The cheapest of these is a 118bhp 1.6-litre, while a 2.0-litre engine is offered with 148 or 178bhp. A manual gearbox is standard for most engines, but the range-topping petrol and diesel are automatic-only. Economy figures are still being worked out for most of the engine range, but the 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel of our test car officially returns 61.4mpg and emits 118g/km of CO2. The forthcoming road-tax system changes mean all 5008s will cost £140 a year to tax, unless their list price reaches or breaches £40,000. A lack of pricing information makes it hard to gauge whether this will be possible, but you’ll have to go really overboard with options if it is. The 5008 prioritises comfort over thrills and that’s no bad thing. Its steering feels a little artificial and the body rolls a fair bit if you take a corner quickly, but if you and your passengers are after a relaxing and comfortable car, the 5008 excels. It absorbs bumps with efficiency and smoothness, is quiet at speed and shrugs off large potholes ...

  • Land Rover Discovery SUV

Posted 2017-02-15 15:40:02 by: George Alston

"The all-new Land Rover Discovery is a triumph" The new Land Rover Discovery takes the solid principles of the car it replaces and hones them to a state of excellence. We’ve long been fans of the outgoing Discovery, but over its 12-year tenure (the Disco 3 and 4 were fundamentally the same car), rivals like the BMW X5, Volvo XC90 and Audi Q7 moved the big SUV game on so much that the Discovery 4 was beginning to feel its age. That’s not to do the old car a disservice: its seven-seat practicality, extensive off-road capability and fundamental charm deservedly won it loyal owners and many plaudits over the years – it’s just that the new car maintains and amplifies these aspects, revitalising the Discovery name once again. Image 1 of 21 Highlights? Well, for starters, seven adults can genuinely get comfortable in the new Discovery, with those in the third row of seats getting clear space between their knees and the second row, a well as their heads and the Discovery’s roof. In seven-seat configuration, the car’s 258-litre boot is similar in size to those of some superminis, and capacity more than quadruples when travelling five-up. Economy has been improved by some margin, too, thanks to a staggering 450kg weight loss and a new 2.0-litre diesel engine, which replaces the capable but thirsty 3.0-litre used in the old car. That engine is still available, although it’s far more economical in the new Discovery, managing a shade under 40mpg. The 26mpg of the 3.0-litre supercharged petrol engine is best glossed over, as it’s not expected to find many homes in the UK. Specifying the new Discovery with the 237bhp 2.0-litre engine is no hardship, thanks to its 0-62mph time of 8.3 seconds and fuel economy of 43.5mpg. Company-car drivers should note, however, that CO2 emissions of 171g/km place the new Disco in a higher Benefit-in-Kind bracket (34%) than an entry-level X5, Q7 or XC90. As long as you’re happy with that hiccup, ...

  • Mazda MX-5 RF convertible

Posted 2017-02-14 15:06:53 by: George Alston

"The Mazda MX-5 RF has a retractable metal roof instead of the standard model's fabric version, adding an extra dose of style and refinement to an already impressive package." The Mazda MX-5 RF is a cross between the standard convertible MX-5 and a fixed-roof coupe version of the car. RF stands for ‘Retractable Fastback’ – a reference to the power-folding hardtop – and the model’s appeal lies in the extra style and refinement the roof brings when it’s in place. The roof can be raised or lowered at speeds of up to 6mph at the press of a button, unlike the standard MX-5’s fabric version, which requires manual intervention. It makes the interior of the car much quieter and more relaxing when you’re trying to eat up motorway miles on a long journey. While the extra weight of the roof has a very slight effect on straight-line speed, the MX-5 remains a hugely fun and rewarding car to drive on a twisty road in RF form. The hard-top roof doesn’t affect the car’s practicality and both of the trim levels available include plenty of standard equipment. There are hatchbacks on the market with more power than the MX-5, but few have its handling characteristics and we prefer the Mazda to its nearest rival, the Fiat 124 Spider, which isn’t available with a folding hard-top at present. Whether you decide to spend the extra £2,000 on the RF over the standard MX-5 is likely to depend on which body shape you prefer and how often you plan to drive the car with the roof up. If the RF is the version you decide to go for, we’d recommend spending extra to get the bigger, 158bhp 2.0-litre engine, as the extra power over the 129bhp 1.5-litre helps compensate for the roof’s extra weight. ...

  • Kia Rio hatchback

Posted 2017-01-31 12:22:53 by: George Alston

"The Kia Rio is a competent supermini, but because it doesn't excel in any one area, it's difficult to recommend over the competition." The Kia Rio has almost become the physical representation of the word ‘sensible’ in the supermini class and the latest model does nothing to change this. If anything, the car looks even more conservative than its predecessor – its strengths lie in practicality, economy and value for money. The supermini class is one of the most important for manufacturers and it shows when you look at the strength of the Rio’s rivals: the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo, SEAT Ibiza, Skoda Fabia and Vauxhall Corsa are all very accomplished alternatives. Image 1 of 21 Kia has revamped the Rio’s engine range and there are now four to choose from, including an all-important 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol that uses a turbo to provide good economy and some punchy performance. It’s available in two different power outputs and will be the best engine for the majority of buyers. The 1.0-litre petrol is joined by 1.25 and 1.4-litre petrols, as well as two versions of a 1.4-litre diesel, which returns the best economy figures in the range. The 99 and 118bhp versions of the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine are the best performers, capable of 0-62mph in 10.3 and 9.8 seconds respectively. While it’s peppy enough, it isn’t as flexible or refined as some of the engines available in rivals and it doesn’t make up for the fact that the Rio is about as thrilling to drive as it is to look at. Dull steering means it’s not as much fun as a Fiesta or the new Nissan Micra, while it also lacks the polish of cars such as the Volkswagen Polo. As you’d expect of a car billed as sensible, practicality is good. The amount of space available in the boot is up there with the best in class and room for rear-seat passengers isn’t bad at all. Few people ever bought the Rio as a three-door model, so Kia has ceased offering ...
