  • Subaru Impreza hatchback

Posted 2017-11-16 17:16:10 by: George Alston

"Subaru's four-wheel-drive family hatchback is likeable but flawed" The Subaru Impreza name has become somewhat forgotten in recent years. Once associated with top-flight rally cars and famous motorsport personalities, the sportiness baton later passed to the high-performance WRX STi which became a standalone model in 2008. The Impreza name has since been reserved for practical and plain family hatchbacks – but this latest version hopes to return to the limelight after too long in obscurity. While the previous Impreza didn't take many sales from its Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra or Volkswagen Golf rivals, this latest aims to raise Subaru's profile and is intended to sell on a combination of driver appeal and all-weather versatility. And with competition as talented as the SEAT Leon, Honda Civic and Renault Megane, the Impreza needs to be a well rounded car to live with, too. Image 2 of 14 The latest Impreza is all-new from the ground up, growing slightly compared to its predecessor to allow a more spacious, comfortable interior, while also sitting slightly lower to reduce cornering lean. The structure is claimed to be up to twice as stiff as before, too, in pursuit of enhanced body control. The Impreza won't be mounting a broadside offensive against the entire model range of rival cars, though – it's only offered in a single driver-focused trim level to compete with higher-spec models such as the Ford Focus Titanium X and Renault Megane GT. There are two petrol engines to choose from: an entry-level 1.6-litre and a more powerful 154bhp 2.0-litre, but both the Renault and Ford offer more power than the more expensive Subaru. Image 3 of 14 The Subaru is also different in its use of a CVT automatic gearbox, while power is transmitted using a four-wheel-drive system that sends slightly more to the front wheels for foolproof handling. The 2.0-litre promises more driver involvement than the smaller engine permits, thanks to ...

  • Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 SUV

Posted 2017-11-07 16:18:58 by: George Alston

“The Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 is faster than a Porsche Macan, but even driving enthusiasts may baulk at its price and running costs” The Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 is the result of Mercedes’ SUV sales success on the one hand and the popularity of its sporty AMG models on the other. In theory, merging them together should have created 2017’s most desirable new car. At least in countries where fuel is cheaper than it is in the UK anyway, because if there’s one thing the ripsnorting GLC 63 isn’t, it’s economical. But neither are the GLC 63’s closest rivals, including the Porsche Macan Turbo, Audi SQ5, supercharged Jaguar F-Pace and forthcoming Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio. Each one is a ‘halo car’ for their respective manufacturer’s SUV line-up, as the vast majority of these SUVs will actually be sold with a 2.0-litre diesel engine under the bonnet. Image 1 of 21 With double that capacity, the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol in the GLC 63 makes either 469 or 503bhp, depending if you go for the ‘standard’ version or the even faster GLC 63 S. Do so and your SUV can get from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds, while optional features like ceramic brakes will be more familiar to supercar owners and racing drivers. Despite all this performance, the comfortable and practical GLC interior has been kept intact, except for an occasionally jittery ride courtesy of firm suspension and large alloy wheels. These help make the steering and chassis feel precise but may prove tiresome on UK roads, so we’d recommend the standard 19-inch wheels. The GLC 63 is also fitted with 4MATIC four-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic gearbox as standard, so not only does the driving experience give you a sense that the fastest GLC is unflappable, it should also prove capable in wintry conditions. Image 2 of 21 As you’d expect for an SUV costing around £70,000, equipment levels are generous, with the standard model getting Mercedes’ impressive ...

  • Volvo V90 T8 Twin Engine hybrid

Posted 2017-11-01 13:05:19 by: George Alston

"Achingly stylish, well made and very comfortable, but not as big as a Volvo estate should be" The Volvo V90 Twin Engine is a plug-in petrol hybrid estate that rivals large executive estates like the Audi A6 Avant, BMW 5 Series Touring and Jaguar XF Sportbrake. The Volvo stands out in its class as being the only plug-in hybrid that’s available in estate format and sits at the top of the current V90 range. Image 1 of 17 Powered by a four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor, V90 Twin Engine produces 407bhp, yet an official economy figure of 141.2mpg and CO2 emissions of just 46g/km mean you can have your cake and eat it when it comes to performance and running costs. As is the trend with the latest generation of Volvos, the V90 prioritises comfort, luxury and passenger space over all else. While quick, it’s not as sharp to drive as its sportier rivals – but it is the perfect alternative if wafting along in serene comfort is more important to you than out-and-out driving involvement. Beautifully designed inside and out, the V90 is one of the most stylish estates on sale. Paired with its unique combination of hybrid power and comfort-orientated set-up, the Volvo V90 T8 Twin Engine is a high-quality executive car with an individualistic edge and reasonable running costs for its size, weight and power. ...

  • MG ZS SUV

Posted 2017-10-31 16:44:18 by: George Alston

"The attractive MG ZS offers low-cost SUV practicality, but not much in the way of driving fun" With compact SUVs now bigger business than ever, what better way for MG to increase its profile than to launch a rival to the Renault Captur, Nissan Juke and SEAT Arona? The MG ZS is a smaller understudy to the MG GS and uses a shortened version of that car's platform. It's fair to say that, although many will recognise the history of the octagonal MG badge, the Chinese-owned brand has struggled for mainstream acceptance in recent years. With the ZS it hopes to firmly establish itself as a maker of cars with more to them than just a low sticker price. But is this family crossover truly cheerful as well as cheap? Image 4 of 14 Externally, it's hard to overlook the similarity between the ZS' nose treatment and that of the Mazda CX-3, but this lack of originality isn't necessarily a bad thing. All too often car companies proceed too far down the road to wackiness; instead, the MG ZS is entirely contemporary, with strong hints of SEAT design from the rear three-quarters. It's derivative, perhaps, but certainly doesn't look like it came from the bargain basement. Pleasingly, the interior marks considerable progress from earlier MG models, with an up-to-date look and sensible layout that incorporates all the features that crossover buyers expect. Cruise control and Bluetooth, for instance, are standard across the range, as are LED daytime running lights and tail-lights. The top-spec Exclusive model is quite lavishly equipped, but it's the price-leading Explore that throws the cat among the crossover pigeons with its modest £12,495 starting price. This puts it among the very cheapest SUVs on the market, with only the Dacia Duster available for much less outlay. And, although the Explore does without some of the glitzier features of more grandly equipped models, it's at this end of the range that the ZS demonstrates just how far your money ...

  • Abarth 595C convertible

Posted 2017-10-30 12:15:57 by: George Alston

"The Abarth 595C isn't the best car in its class, but it can claim to be the one with the most character" The Abarth 595C is the convertible version of the Abarth 595 hatchback, which uses the Fiat 500 as its base. There are convertible versions of both 595 and 695 models, with the exception of the extreme 695 Biposto. All come with an electric fabric roof that folds down to sit on top of the boot, leaving the side windows and pillars in place. You don’t quite get the full convertible feel, because so much of the car’s structure remains in place, but there’s no denying you get the open-top motoring experience. The convertibles get the same sporty alloy wheels as their hatchback counterparts and the same turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engine, which is engineered to produce more power as you move up the range. Abarth 595 and 695 convertibles come equipped with the latest Uconnect infotainment system and styling packs that vary depending on which specific version you go for. The 595 line-up consists of four cars: the standard 143bhp 595, the mid-range 158bhp Trofeo and 163bhp Turismo, topping out with the hardcore 178bhp Competizione version. The latter comes with stiffer suspension and the option of a limited-slip differential to improve the car’s performance in corners. It’s the one to go for if you want the fastest, most uncompromising 595. Thanks to a relatively low weight, economy is reasonable for a car focused principally on performance. Practicality is hampered by the car’s size and a fabric roof that bunches up at the rear of the car isn’t great for rear visibility, even if doesn’t impinge on boot space. All of the cars in the range have firm suspension, particularly the Competizione, so poorly surfaced roads can send big jolts into the cabin. Overall, the 595C is a fun-to-drive convertible that offers buyers a stylish city car with a decent dose of performance. It feels nimble, has a characterful engine and the gearbox ...

  • Mercedes X-Class pickup

Posted 2017-10-27 15:50:29 by: George Alston

"The Mercedes X-Class is a slightly more expensive cousin of the Nissan Navara and Renault Alaskan that brings a truly upmarket brand to the pickup truck class" Locked in battle with BMW and Audi to fill every sector of the car market, Mercedes has launched a raft of all-new models in the past few years – but none quite as different as the Mercedes X-Class pickup. For now, it’s the only premium brand with its own vehicle in the booming one-tonne pickup class, with the Volkswagen Amarok its most upmarket competitor. Mercedes hasn’t developed the X-Class entirely from scratch: under the polished exterior, huge Mercedes front badge and 18-inch alloy wheels, sits a backbone shared with the Nissan Navara and Renault Alaskan. Some die-hard Mercedes fans may find this a disappointment, but it bodes well for the toughness and reliability of the X-Class. The X-Class is available with the 2.3-litre diesel from the Navara. It’s a tried-and-tested engine, with two power levels on offer. With a single turbo in the X200d, there’s 161bhp on tap, while the twin-turbo X250d gets 187bhp for improved acceleration and towing ability. Unlike the Navara and Alaskan, the X-Class will also be available with a six-cylinder diesel engine producing 255bhp – a 34bhp advantage over the 3.0-litre TDI Amarok – when the X350 is added to the range in 2018. The X-Class is a comfortable and refined pickup truck that handles well. All the engine options, both current and forthcoming, give it with plenty of power and make it an excellent car for towing. What makes it difficult to recommend is its high price relative to rivals and its underwhelming interior quality. The Mercedes X-Class doesn’t have a crash-safety rating from Euro NCAP yet, but the Nissan Navara was awarded four stars when it underwent testing in 2015. That’s a reasonable result for a pickup and the X-Class will feature safety kit including autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance ...

  • Porsche Cayenne SUV

Posted 2017-10-27 09:06:03 by: George Alston

"The Porsche Cayenne offers the brand's expected driving appeal, packaged as a practical, comfortable SUV" While long-time sports-car maker Porsche's decision to launch an SUV was initially controversial, there's no doubt that the Cayenne has been an enormous success. Now in its third generation, the original high-performance SUV has inspired countless premium carmakers to introduce their own luxury off-roaders, including the Bentley Bentayga and Maserati Levante. The Bentley actually shares its mechanical platform with the Cayenne, as does the Audi Q7 and third-generation Volkswagen Touareg. The Cayenne range is by far the broadest of these, though – although some models align with its Mercedes GLE, BMW X5 and Audi Q7 rivals, the range-topping Turbo S is more expensive than its Mercedes-AMG GLE 63, Audi SQ7 and BMW X5 M competition. Image 2 of 26 Of all the SUVs, only the Bentley Bentayga W12 can compete with the range-topping Porsche Cayenne Turbo for performance. A towering 542bhp is provided by a 4.0-litre V8, which is smaller yet more powerful than the 4.8-litre engine of its predecessor. None of this flagship's understudies could be described as slow, though – the Cayenne S has 434bhp and the entry-level Cayenne has a still-considerable 335bhp at its disposal. A diesel version, though, is notable by its absence at launch, but it's likely that diesel and plug-in hybrid models will arrive before long. The latest car is easily recognised as a Cayenne and has overtones of the smaller Porsche Macan, a car that looks far more lithe and dynamic than previous Cayennes ever did. While Porsche hasn't taken any big risks with the latest model's looks, it's undeniably handsome and fits in well with other models in the range – not looking uncomfortable in the presence of a Porsche 718 Cayman or Porsche 911 sports car. The same is true inside, where the look and feel is very much like the Porsche Panamera hatchback or its ...

  • Vauxhall Insignia Country Tourer estate

Posted 2017-10-18 16:25:07 by: George Alston

"The Vauxhall Insignia Country Tourer is a practical, capable and good-looking SUV alternative" The Vauxhall Insignia Country Tourer is an estate car that offers a lower-riding alternative to more traditional SUVs, with rivals including the Volkswagen Passat Alltrack, Skoda Octavia Scout, Audi A4 Allroad, Volvo V60 Cross Country and Subaru Outback. Just like those cars, the Country Tourer is based on a conventional estate (the Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer) with the option of four-wheel drive, an increased ride height, plastic exterior cladding and lots of standard equipment. Image 1 of 14 For now, the Insignia Country Tourer is available with one engine – a 168bhp 2.0-litre diesel – with a more powerful twin-turbo diesel due to arrive early in 2018. The current engine offers decent performance and quiet running, helping make the Country Tourer a relaxed and swift cruiser. The Country Tourer is just as spacious, practical and well built as the standard Sports Tourer, with a focus on comfort on rougher roads. It’s a fine all-round package, backed up with rough-and-tumble styling and capable four-wheel drive (if specified), at a price that’s competitive compared to rivals. ...

  • Hyundai Kona SUV

Posted 2017-10-17 14:22:20 by: George Alston

“The Hyundai Kona looks more exciting than the brand’s other cars, but delivers sensible, middling competence rather than excellence in any one area” The Hyundai Kona is another entrant into the burgeoning small SUV class and goes up against numerous rivals, including the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur, Kia Stonic, Peugeot 2008, Citroen C3 Aircross and SEAT Arona. It’s a trait of cars in this class to look a little less conventional than their hatchback counterparts and the Kona follows this trend, with a design that’s funkier and slightly more eye-catching than more utilitarian Hyundai models we’re used to, such as the i20. Image 1 of 15 Two petrol engines are available from launch, with an all-electric Kona pencilled in for later this year and a diesel joining the ranks in 2018. For now, a 118bhp 1.0-litre petrol is the only engine available in four of the five trim levels on offer. It claims official economy of 52.3mpg in all but entry-level spec, where smaller alloys give the numbers a slight boost. The alternative is the expensive, range-topping Premium GT model that has a 175bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine. Naturally, performance improves significantly, but underwhelming fuel economy and a high price tag make it hard to recommend. Most buyers looking at a Kona should consider the mid-range SE and Premium trim levels. The former adds key items like a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while the latter boasts some of the luxuries found on the range-topping model. Of the two, the SE represents better value, and its 17-inch wheels provide a smoother ride than the 18-inch versions on the Premium and Premium GT models. Image 3 of 15 On the road, the Kona is competent rather than invigorating to drive. It makes sense that Hyundai has engineered it this way, as most customers don’t want, let alone expect, sporty handling characteristics, but it does mean that performance is yet another area in which the Kona offers ...

  • BMW X3 SUV

Posted 2017-10-16 08:58:54 by: George Alston

"The latest BMW X3 blends comfort, technology and real driver appeal in a very well rounded package" After the big sales success of the BMW X5, it came as no surprise that a smaller, more affordable model would follow soon after and the BMW X3 has mirrored its bigger brother's popularity since 2003. But while the first generation felt like a bit of a compromise, the latest model is a thoroughly sophisticated machine. It needs to be. Not only does it have to face the Audi Q5, Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Mercedes GLC and Volvo XC60, but also the Jaguar F-Pace, Porsche Macan and Range Rover Velar. What's more, as BMW models usually follow a seven-year production cycle, we can expect the latest X3 to still be with us in the mid-2020s. BMW really needs to have got this important model right. Image 1 of 20 One thing that's clear is BMW hasn't taken many risks when it comes to style. The X3 looks exactly as you'd expect the brand's middleweight SUV to look. The trademark double-kidney grille has become more rounded and pronounced, the headlamps have an aggressive, swept-forward look and the body contours are more expressive than those on the previous model, but it's still very easily identified as an X3, without stepping on the style-conscious toes of its smaller sibling the X1. Nor is the interior treatment particularly bold, but strong overtones of the latest BMW 5 Series saloon are very welcome. The dashboard is sleek, smart looking, well arranged and assembled beautifully out of first-class materials. In fact, it has the Volvo XC60 beaten for upmarket appeal. It's not only range-topping examples that look and feel the part inside, either. Every model has leather upholstery and interior surfaces that are soft to the touch, with gloss-black or aluminium accents to add visual interest. Equipment is generous, too – SE, xLine and M Sport trims are offered and all come with an infotainment system that incorporates BMW ConnectedDrive, a 20GB music ...
